The truth about acai MonaVie

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

When MonaVie started touting its products in January 2005, it promised consumers this miracle fruit juice called acai MonaVie that could provide numerous health benefits. Among them are high protein levels, rich antioxidants that can slow the aging process, and a complete spectrum of vitamins and minerals.

MonaVie even got famous personalities to endorse its juices, and combined with its multi-level marketing scheme, it became the next best thing in health drinks.

But don’t believe the hype! MonaVie isn’t real acai for three things: 1)  MonaVie does not source its acai berries from Sambazon, the best source of high-grade acai berries. 2)  MonaVie drinks are not made from 100% pure dried acai. They are a blend of puree and freeze-dried powder. 3)  MonaVie drinks are made from 19 types of fruit berries, and the precise amount of acai in each bottle is unknown.

In fact, there is no written document that proves MonaVie contains acai berry extracts.

Contrary to what MonaVie claims, its products do not have the highest ORAC rating among similar products on the market. ORAC, or oxygen radical absorbance capacity, is a rating that determines the amount of antioxidants in a food item.

Based on third-party analysis, MonaVie ranks only fifth among health juice drinks in terms of ORAC rating. Vibe topped the chart with an ORAC score of 153,746; Vemma scored 81,842; Riovida had 42,250; Zrii ranked fourth with 33,847; while Mona Vie was a mere 31,099.

The top 10 health drink brands were also tested for fruit natural extract contents, and MonaVie fared poorly against the competition. Only Vibe, Centrum and Bazi contained all or most of the 27 vitamins and minerals essential to a healthy diet.

What’s even worse is the ridiculous price of MonaVie products. According to the MonaVie label, the recommended daily dosage is four ounces, which translates to one bottle per week. A bottle of MonaVie costs around $40 to $45, so you will need to spend at least $160 per month for a supplement that might not even contain real acai.

Why settle for acai MonaVie when you can get 100% true acai at lower prices?
